Silver Spring Stage is holding auditions for Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, directed by Fred Zirm and produced by Pauline Griller Mitchell.

Auditions will be held at Silver Spring Stage (10145 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD) on Monday, March 19 and Tuesday, March 20 from 7:30-9:30.

Call backs will be held between 7:30 and 10:00 on Thursday, March 22.

Please use Sign-up Genius link below to sign up for one of the two nights of auditions, either Monday or Tuesday, and an hour slot: either 7:30 to 8:30 or 8:30 to 9:30.

Actors should have a one-minute memorized monologue ready to perform at auditions. Please choose a piece that reflects your range and your ability to do contemporary drama.  You will then be asked to read from the script.

Walk-ins will be accommodated only if time permits. Be prepared to stay for the whole audition as you may be asked to read more than once.

Please bring a hard copy of your resume and a headshot, if you have one. The audition form is available here to print out and fill out to bring to auditions.

Performances will be the weekends of June 1, 8, 15, and 22, closing on June 23. Shows are at 8:00 on Friday and Saturday and at 2:00 on Sundays (June 10 and 17.)

There will be 3-4 rehearsals a week scheduled according to Stage and actor availability.

The uneasy existence of upper-class suburbanites Agnes and Tobias and their permanent houseguest, Agnes's witty alcoholic sister Claire, is further disrupted by the sudden appearance of lifelong family friends Harry and Edna, empty-nesters who ask to stay with them to escape an unnamed terror. They are soon followed by Agnes and Tobias's bitter 36-year-old daughter Julia, who returns home following the collapse of her fourth marriage. For a moment, the characters are forced to face the truth about themselves and their relationships, a very human mix of love and pain.

Agnes: a handsome woman in her 50s who sees herself as the preserver of decorum and the delicate balance among members of a less than happy family.  She is still grieving the loss of her son Teddy and the shadow it cast upon her marriage.

Tobias: her husband, a few years older. A restrained man who has done almost everything correctly, but he can explode when his efforts at peacemaking and perfection go unappreciated or when he feels guilty about his few failings.

Claire: Agnes’s alcoholic younger sister. She prides herself on being an unbiased observer of other people’s shortcomings but has given up on achieving much of anything on her own.

Julia: Tobias and Agnes’s 36-year old daughter and struggling survivor of four failed marriages. A cross between an innocent victim and an insufferable brat as she returns home yet again.

Edna and Harry: Very much like Agnes and Tobias. Their nest is truly empty, though, and they come to their friends’ home fleeing an unnamed fear.
