Round and Round the Garden
by Alan Ayckbourn

Round and Round the Garden, by Alan Ayckbourn, June 24 - July 23, 2005, Directed by: Seth Ghitelman June 24 - July 23, 2005

Director: Seth Ghitelman

Alan Ayckbourn has had three careers – actor, director and playwright. It is the latter career where he has made his mark not only in his native Britain, but around the world. Rivaling America’s Neil Simon, he is one of the true masters of comedy. Never resting on laurels, Ayckbourn is always challenging the conventions of comedy. Round and Round the Garden is part of The Norman Conquests trilogy, which also features Table Manners and Living Together. All occur during a single weekend in different parts of the same house and concern a group of related people. Since his first play was produced in 1959, Ayckbourn has penned more than 50 works for the theater. With wit and ingenuity, he portrays the foibles and anxieties of England’s suburban middle class. He became Sir Alan Ayckbourn when he was knighted in 1997.

In Round and Round the Garden, we are taken into the garden of love, hate and misunderstanding. In a midsummer weekend, Norman was hoping to have a dirty weekend with Annie, his sister-in-law. His plans are thwarted by his other sister-in-law, Sarah. Undaunted, Norman makes a pass at Sarah. He declaims his love for his brother-in-law Reg. The only one safe from Norman is the cat in the tree and Tom, the ponderous vet and Annie's would-be suitor. Tom is given instructions to woo Annie, but he needs remedial help as he ends up thinking that Ruth, Norman's wife, is in love with him. Enjoy British simmering summer love and find out which lucky woman ends up with Norman and if Tom can heal the kitty.

Seth Ghitelman returns to the Stage having directed Fifth of July last season.
